So Who Remixed History?

The crew behind the set is the inspiring and enthusiastic bunch of ABC hipsters: Dan Buhagiar - radio producer for Triple J; Pip Shea - web designer and media artist; David Regos - film/video and documentary guy and FBi radio jock; James West - producer for Triple J’s Hack.

Where did the Remixing History concept come from?
Dan: “It was my concept and it came from a number of nights on the dance floor where you’d be with a group of hipsters but the cheesiest song in the world would come on and everyone on the dance floor was unified. It was shared love. And even people you could tell weren’t born when it was released had appreciation for it too. And that idea, of how amazing memory can be, even when it’s not your own memory… that’ s what sparked this.”

What was the vibe like up on stage while you were mixing it up?
Dan: “It felt really good. We’ve done this before twice - once at Underbelly, Carriage Works and for a birthday party at one of the random arty nights at the Columbian Hotel. They were really great experiences too. Tonight was a bit daunting because tonight was a room full of amazing Sydney artists. And hipsters with amazing haircuts.”
David: “I always find the vibe is always fun but really busy and hectic as well cos we actually have content spanning 40 years. So to squeeze that into an hour is really rushed. Because we’re mixing it all live, it’s very busy. It’s hard to pick up the vibe. We’re kind of in our little world.”
Dan: “We really feel that if we died now and our lives flashed before our eyes, it would look like this - [explains what was happening up in stage] moves really rapidly and most of the time you’re laughing, sometimes it’s a little sad and nostalgic but generally it’s all very good.”

Where do you find all this incredible content?
Pip: “I do it really organicly - I have an idea and I just Google it.”
Dan: “The internet and our friends are two amazing resources that we exploit as best we can. Everyone’s memory is different and the aim of the project is to spark everyone in the room at least a few times to think, ‘Oh my god, I forgot that ever existed!’ We try and get a broad range of ideas.”
David: “There are certain times you’re cruising around YouTube and you happen upon some random commercial someone has uploaded. Or you go through your VCRs and you see those ADs and you’re like, ‘That ad was pure genius.’ It takes you back to your childhood.
