Creative Sydney
Wednesday night
Day 1, Week 1
While the white sails of the Sydney Opera House were being decorated with the works of Brian Eno, the MCA was having a visual (and audio) sensory overload of its own.
Remixing History was an ode to the years of decades past, the last four to be exact, and was delivered in the form of commercial jingles, snippets from popular TV shows and (often cheesy) pop music, with news reels to top it off. The result was something of a memory feast, catapulting you back in time and transporting you to a moment that perhaps could have been lost forever. Dan Buhagiar, radio producer for Triple J and one quarter part of the Remixing History crew says, “The aim of the project is to spark everyone in the room at least a few times to think, ‘Oh my god, I forgot that ever existed!’”
Picture this (the opening scene)
The Church’s The Unguarded Moment juxtaposed with images of Cabbage Patch Kids and a Sunnyboy ice-block commercial jingle. It takes you back there, good or bad, and it works as a mash-up DJ/VJ entertainment set, drawing a pleasant mix of people - creatives with hipsters - who were seen dancing away to ridiculous and fun mash ups of similar pop culture moments to the one above.
